The Monkeys And The Moon One night a little monkey went to a wll to get a drink. As he bent over, he saw the moon shining on the water. In great fear he ran to the other monkeys. " My friends," he cried, " the moon has fallen into the water!" " Where? where?" asked the others. " Come with me and I will show you," said the little monkey. He led them to the well, and they crowded around and looked down. " Yes, there she is!" they cried. " We have lsot our beautiful moon! How dark and clearly night will be without her! What shall we do? What shall we do?" "Listen to me," said an old monkey. "There is only one thing to do. We must draw the moon out of the well." "Yes! yes! yes!" shouted the others. "We will. Only tell us how." "See that branch growing over the well? We will make a chain from it and draw the moon out in a minute." "Good! good!" cried all the others. "Let us do it at once." Soon a chain of monkeys was swinging from the branch, down over the well. But, alas! Just as the little monkey at the end of the chain nearest the water was about to reach out and grasp the moon, a dreadful thing happened. The branch broke, and all the foolish monkeys fell into the well and were drowned. But the moon went on sailing through the sky.

One day,a little monkey is playing by the well.
一天，有只小猴子在井边玩儿。
He looks in the well and shouts :
它往井里一瞧，高喊道：
“Oh!My God!The moon has fallen into the well!”
“噢！我的天！月亮掉到井里头啦！”
An older monkey runs over, takes a look,and says,
一只大猴子跑来一看，说，
“Goodness me!The moon is really in the water!”

And elderly monkey comes over.

大家都埋怨小猴子，过了一会儿，水面恢复了平静，井里又一个出现了又圆又亮的月亮， 小猴子伸出手去捞月亮，可是刚一碰到月亮，马上就又碎成一片一片。猴子们捞了几次都没有成功。大家嚷嚷着：“捞得累死了，月亮还是捞不上来。不捞了。”

这时候，老猴子一抬头，看见月亮还在天上，它喘着气说：“不用捞了，不用捞了，月亮好好的挂在天上呢，井里的月亮是它的倒影。”猴子们抬头看着月亮，笑了。

典出《法苑珠林·愚戆篇·杂痴部》：过去有一个伽师国，国内有一座波罗柰城。在城郊人迹稀少的森林中，生存着数百只猴子。一天晚上，这群猴嬉戏着来到了一口井旁。不知是哪只猴子先发现月影在井中一晃一晃，便大吃一惊：“不好了，月亮掉到井里去了！”
一只年长的猴子一听，赶过来看了看井中的月亮，便对同伴们说：“月亮掉到井里，我们应该共同努力把它捞上来，免得叫世界上每个夜晚都黑沉沉的。”可怎么才能捞出月亮呢？那只年长的猴子一拍脑壳：“有办法了，我攀在树枝上，你们拽住我的尾巴，一个连一个，就可以捞出月亮了。”
于是，那群猴便一个接一个，连成了一长串。可没想到连在一起的猴群太重了，树枝承受不住，在猴子快接近水面时“咔嚓”一声折断了，这群猴都掉到了井里。现如今，人们常用这则典故来告诫，如果庸人自扰，难免会招致灾祸。
